The city of Füssen is embedded in a gorgeous landscape surrounded by mountains and lakes, directly at the roman street Via Claudia Augusta. The historical old town of Füssen invites to loiter and discover with its Italian ambiance. With its »Hohen Schloß«, Füssen is also called the »romantic soul of Bavaria«. This late-gothic castle complex was the ex summer residence of the prince-bishops of Augsburg. There are two museums in the north wing: the state gallery and the city canvas gallery. Concerts take place throughout the whole year in the princes’ hall of this monastery. A further landmark is the »museum of the city Füssen« in the baroque Benedictine monastery St. Mang directly at the Lechriver.

Whoever wants to visit Füssen should take a closer look at the »romantic street«. This is a drive of particular nature with cultural attraction and a lot variety. The worldwide known holiday road connects famous places, for example, Würzburg, Rothenburg o.d. T., Ausgburg and Landsberg am Lech. Then the journey ends after 366 km in the perhaps most romantic part of Bavaria, in Füssen.

Relaxing and simultaneously enjoying the gorgeous area at ours can be best accomplished during a trip on the Forggensee. On the 12 km long and 3 km wide lake you have a magnificent view of the Alps with the impressive Säuling and of course castle Neuschwanstein.

Directly at the coast of the Forggensee lies the festival house. A number of events take place there regularly such as musicals, theatres, concerts, operettas and exhibitions. The unique position with direct view of castle Neuschwanstein makes a visit to a memorable experience.

Castle Neuschwanstein

Castle Neuschwanstein was built under the order of King Ludwig II of Bavaria amongst cliffs in a picturesque mountainous scenario. It is the most famous of such castles and one of the most well known tourist destinations. Every year millions of visitors come to Schwangau to admire the unique architecture and interior of the “fairy-tale castle.” Nearby also lies the Castle Hohenschwangau, where the King, also known as the “Dream King”, spent his childhood.

In the crystal thermae Schwangau, you literally dive into another world. Kinglike ambiance provides all basins with direct view of the fairy-tale castles. The thermae and sauna landscapes are decorated with 15 tons of precious and semi-precious stones such as amethysts, rose quartz and agates. In the 12-percent sole-outdoor basin, unique in the Allgäu, one floats like in the Dead See with relaxing under water music. Seven theme-saunas, two steam baths and one salt steam bath should provide something for every sauna fan.

Tegelbergbahn

Probably the most beautiful viewpoint of the fascinating world of the high mountains and foothills of the Alps can be found on the Tegelberg. The Tegelbergbahn is a 2146 meter long aerial passenger line and transports up to 470 persons per hour on to the gigantic 1881 meter high mountain. On the peak next to the mountain railway there is a pub, the “Tegelberghaus”, and directly next to it the “panorama restaurant” of the station. You have an unique view over the kingly landscape from one of the panorama terraces. An interesting landmark is located directly nearby the valley station. In 1934, an expanded Roman villa annex was discovered which was partly excavated and can be visited.

Wieskirche (Pilgrimage Church)

The Wieskirche is one of the most famous Rokoko churches worldwide and is located in the district of Wies, next to Steingaden.

A farmer’s wife saw tears in the eyes of a Jesus figure, which was the beginning of the pilgrimage.

In 1745-1754, the pilgrimage church was built for the figure of the suffering Jesus of the scourged saviour.

The gorgeous Lord’s house does not only invite remembrance and pray, but also to view and admire. The Wieskirche even received the title “World Heritage Site” from UNESCO in 1983.
